Where did this strategy come from?

To ensure continuous quality improvement and consistent alignment to partner needs, Heart gathers feedback from the community members closest to the work: principals, teachers, tutors, and families. Heart works closely with each school partner, meeting with principals quarterly to support program success and strong outcomes. Principals make the decision for Heart to operate in their school, and Heart has retained 100% of its school partnerships in Winston-Salem.

Heart analyzes teacher surveys, delivered mid-year and at the end of tutoring, to measure growth in student math confidence and teachers’ satisfaction with the program. In the most recent end-of-year survey, 100% of teachers reported a positive experience and noted increased math confidence among Heart students. Following analysis of the survey results, Heart implements actionable feedback. Prior updates have included clearer student progress reports for teachers and families, more frequent family communication, and added school support.

Families are an essential part of every student’s success, and Heart works to engage them so they better understand what students are working on during tutoring. Families receive a monthly newsletter with program updates and activities to play at home that complement tutoring. Their feedback is encouraged, and families receive mid-year and end-of-year surveys to share their experience with the program. This past school year one parent at Easton Elementary shared, “Heart Math Tutoring has been a wonderful tool for my child’s learning growth in Math. It is wonderful for volunteers with big hearts to take their time to go to the school and help our children learn.”

Community voice shapes how the program shows up in each school, from where Heart operates to how it supports teachers and communicates progress with families. That input keeps the work grounded in the needs of each school community.
